Understanding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that emerges in the aftermath of a traumatic or distressing event. Unlike the typical fear response experienced by most individuals during and immediately after such an event, individuals with PTSD continue to endure intense feelings of fear long after the threat has subsided.

It is essential to recognize that not all individuals with PTSD have necessarily been in direct physical danger. Traumatic experiences leading to PTSD can encompass a range of events, including the sudden death of a loved one or other unexpected traumas.

Symptoms of PTSD typically surface anywhere from three months to several years after the traumatic incident. These symptoms are categorized into four main groups:

  • Re-experiencing Symptoms:
    • Frightening or distressing thoughts
    • Nightmares or unsettling dreams
    • Flashbacks of the traumatic event, accompanied by physical symptoms such as sweating and a racing heart
  • Avoidance Symptoms:
    • Steer clear of thoughts and emotions associated with the traumatic event
    • Avoid places, objects, or events that serve as reminders of the traumatic experience
  • Arousal and Reactivity Symptoms:
    • Persistent feelings of tension or being “on edge”
    • Easily startled
    • Sleep disturbances
    • Episodes of anger outbursts
  • Cognition and Mood Symptoms:
    • Loss of interest in activities once found enjoyable
    • Feelings of blame or guilt related to the traumatic incident
    • Difficulty recalling key aspects of the event
    • Negative thoughts about oneself or the world

The trajectory of PTSD can vary, with some individuals recovering within six months, while others may experience chronic, lifelong symptoms. Early identification and appropriate treatment are crucial in supporting individuals affected by PTSD on their path to recovery.

The common element across all couples is the understanding that they are unable to resolve their relationship problems alone, and are increasingly reaching out for professional help.
