Understanding Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is characterized by sudden, intense fear or discomfort peaking within minutes, involving at least four specific symptoms. A panic attack triggers profound physical reactions, including sweating, shortness of breath, and chest pains resembling a cardiac event, lasting for several minutes.
Recurrent panic attacks often lead to heightened anxiety and preoccupation, prompting lifestyle adjustments to avoid potential triggers. Diagnosis may be considered if an individual experiences four or more panic attacks or lives in constant fear of a recurrence.
Symptoms include palpitations, accelerated heart rate, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, derealization, depersonalization, fear of losing control, “going crazy,” or imminent death.
A diagnosis is warranted if an individual experiences sudden, recurring panic attacks with a sense of losing control, thoughts of death, or impending doom. It may also apply if there’s intense worry about the timing or location of the next panic attack, leading to avoidance behaviors for 30 days or more.
